Betsy was on the couch flipping through magazines--work research, absolutely!--when the door to the apartment opened. Brian wasn't even completely inside before she asked, "Who's Meggan?" with a knowing smile. She hadn't even looked up.

She hadn't looked for that information, either. It wasn't her fault the name was practically screaming at her the second he walked in.

Brian laughed. He knew it sounded silly, implausible, painfully romantic – all very much not Brian things – but that was part of the excitement. "I did! I mean, within reason. Upon further reflection it's possible she read my mind. Either way, I went in there to get flowers for three people and left having crossed my girlfriend off the recipient list..."

Well, girlfriend was too strong a word for the girl he was seeing. But still. He had girlfriends on the brain.

Brian thought about it. How was Meggan so able to recreate Brian's specific, complex feelings into bouquets. "Maybe? I don't know, can you tell if someone else has been in there?" It seemed like it could be true. Brian wasn't especially easy to read, and he couldn't get over how exactly right the flower arrangement Meggan had made for Betsy had been; he was dying for her to see it.
