Logan--at the bar
It wasn't entirely conscious, her reaching out to Logan. But even miserable and several drinks in, Jean knew it wasn't a good idea to get drunk alone, and she didn't exactly have a long list of drinking buddies. So if Logan suddenly got a mental image, a vague impression of Jean at the bar with an empty stool next to her, that was okay.

"Hey Red," he greeted her, with a half-smile. "You rang?"
no subject
Jean looked over when she felt someone sitting down next to her, ready to tell whoever it was that she wasn't interested or the seat was taken or anything to be left alone, but it was Logan. "Huh. Guess I did." The smile she summoned up wasn't at all convincing, but then she hadn't tried very hard. "I hope you don't mind if I'm shitty company."
no subject
Logan very much did mind, but only because Jean should never be upset in her entire life. "What's the matter?"
no subject
"Scott and I broke up." The words sounded completely alien to her, even in her own voice.
no subject
"What did he do to you?" Logan was almost surprised by how protective he felt.
no subject
"What?" She'd been sipping the fresh beer the bartender had brought when she looked up at Logan in surprise. "He didn't do anything to me."
no subject
Sure, that made sense, Scott was that nerd with the glasses, but still. "You sure about that? I'll kick his ass."
no subject
"Scott would die before he hurt me. It wasn't his fault." And she was fully capable of taking care of herself, but that wasn't ranking very high on her list of things to be upset about just then.
no subject
Logan softened. "What happened?"
no subject
"We just didn't fit anymore." The loss was evident in her voice. "We used to, you know, but we haven't in a while. We just finally got around to admitting it, I guess."
no subject
Logan sighed, reached over to rub her shoulder. "I'm sorry, kiddo."
no subject
"Have you ever been in love, Logan?"
no subject
Logan had no idea how to answer that question. Instead he looked at the bartender, signaling for a drink.
no subject
"No commiserating about how it'll get better eventually, then, huh?" Jean noted wryly. "I should probably get people in my life who actually like to share if I want that kind of thing."
no subject
"You can't wait for the time it gets better," Logan said. He knew from pain and trauma. "You just have to learn to live with the pain. Let it be part of you and be normal. And then you can function around it."
no subject
She looked at him appraisingly. "I can't decide if that's the best advice I've ever gotten or the worst." Still, she reached a hand over and squeezed his arm gently.
no subject
"Yeah, me either." He smiled at her, not quite sadly, but with some kind of emotional weight. "You, though. You're gonna be okay. You're a tough cookie."
no subject
"I always sort of pictured myself as a soft and gooey chocolate chip, actually," she shot back, almost joking.
no subject
"Sounds tasty" Logan couldn't resist replying, raising a brow.
no subject
Jean laughed at that; it ached a little, but it felt good too. "I already know you think so."
no subject
"Well you've been in my dreams." He grinned at her.
no subject
"Any good ones I've missed?" She didn't really expect him to answer.
no subject
"If you haven't been there in mind, you've been there in spirit." Better to be suggestive than tell her about his near-constant nightmares.
no subject
"Good to know." Hey, at least one of them should be enjoying themselves, even if only in dreams.
no subject
"You should stop by again sometime." That dream was the best thing that had ever happened to him.
no subject
Her smile went just a little sad, or maybe it always had been. "Maybe once I take that advice of yours." As tempting as it was, even now, she knew it wouldn't be a good idea. She had some pain to get used to first.
no subject
"Good idea." He reached out, coaxed her head onto his shoulder, closed his eyes. "No rush. You get used to it when you get used to it."
no subject
His shoulder was comfortable in a way she hadn't expected, and for a long moment she just breathed him in. "Thanks, Logan."
no subject
"Anytime. And I mean that. Never hesitate."
no subject
Jean smiled and, though she didn't move, Logan could feel her press a grateful kiss to the corner of his mouth.
no subject
It was a little surreal, but incredibly sweet; Logan never expected that kind of gentleness in his life.
