Alex was shocked to get a text from Jean about her and Scott breaking up, for more than one reason, but he was glad she reached out. Scott certainly wouldn't. He had to cancel plans with Jean-Paul, but it didn't take long for Alex to make his way to Scott's. Slipping into the building after someone else carrying groceries, Alex knocked loudly on the apartment door. No way was he letting Scott pretend not to hear.

Date: 2017-03-26 06:13 am (UTC)"That's like the one thing I can't do, sorry." Alex went so far as to wedge his foot in the small crack in the door in case Scott tried to close it on him. "I'm otherwise a pretty full-service brother."

Date: 2017-03-26 06:15 am (UTC)Oh. It was Alex. Scott rolled his eyes (not that anyone else could ever see it when he did that), but held open the door regardless.

Date: 2017-03-26 06:19 am (UTC)Of course now that he was inside, Alex didn't actually have any idea what he should be doing. "Jean told me what happened." That was pretty obvious, but him just showing up was unprecedented enough to warrant an explanation.

Date: 2017-03-26 06:22 am (UTC)"Great. So happy she wanted to share the news with everyone in the world." Scott - lightly - kicked the door closed.

Date: 2017-03-26 06:28 am (UTC)"Don't be stupid, Scott," Alex replied, with no real force behind it. He was okay with Scott lashing out if he needed to. "She knew you could use someone. Sorry it's me." He knew he hadn't exactly been there for Scott for most of their lives.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 06:31 am (UTC)And Scott was fine with that admonishment; he'd known it wasn't true even as he said it. It was kind that Alex had come, but Scott didn't know what to say to him. Just like he hadn't known what to say to Jean for the last while. God, he was the problem, wasn't he? He couldn't connect with people. He didn't exactly have a close relationship with his own brother. "Do you want anything? Food, drink..."

Date: 2017-03-26 06:35 am (UTC)"I want whatever you want. Take-out and beer? Go out and get wasted? Hit the climbing wall until your legs don't work?" He had no idea what Scott's coping mechanisms were. "You want to talk about it?" Alex had a feeling he didn't.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 06:39 am (UTC)Scott didn't know what his coping mechanisms were either. He wanted to punch someone, but that could probably wait until the gym in the morning, where the "someone" was a punching bag. "Take out and beer, I guess. I don't want to talk about it. You talk about something."
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 06:44 am (UTC)"Okay. You order the takeout and I'll talk." Alex had no idea what to talk about, so he just blurted out the first thing that came to mind. "I've been having a lot of sex with Jean-Paul."
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 06:46 am (UTC)Well, that got Scott to look up from his laptop, where he was placing their food order. "Huh?"

Date: 2017-03-26 06:57 am (UTC)Alex shoved his hands in his pockets and leaned against the couch. "So the year before Dad died and I moved back here, we spent the summer in Montreal. I met Jean-Paul and spent most of my time with him and his twin sister. It's kinda like that again, only this time he's the one who might not be staying long." Okay, a lot of other things had changed too.

Date: 2017-03-26 06:58 am (UTC)So that's what Alex had meant the other day when he said he and Jean-Paul were hanging out. Scott smiled, a little, because he had to, because he wanted Alex to know he was judging him for it. "Why wouldn't he stay?"

Date: 2017-03-26 07:06 am (UTC)"Because it might not be the best place for him to settle," Alex replied with a shrug, hiding even from himself how much he really wished it was. "He got outed as a mutant and lost his Olympic medals, so he's kind of trying to avoid the scandal. And his sister has...issues."
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:09 am (UTC)"Wait, he's that guy? The skier?" Scott had never considered the possibility that these two Jean-Pauls were the same person. "That was insane, what happened with the medals. No one can prove that he did or didn't cheat, it's not like he grew skis out of his feet." Turns out this topic was a good distraction. "What does he do outside of the athlete thing? What's up with his sister?"
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:18 am (UTC)Alex laughed softly. "Yeah, that's him. And not like they cared. I won't be surprised if they start testing everyone for the x-gene before letting them compete, four years from now." That Alex was bitter about. Where was the line between 'normal' mutations that gave athletes a natural advantage and cheating? He doubted the answer was as simple as a single gene. "And mostly he takes care of Jeanne-Marie. Well, on the days she's Jeanne-Marie. She kind of has multiple personalities." There was no kind of about it.

Date: 2017-03-26 07:20 am (UTC)"The way we're locked out of, god, I don't know, anything, everything... It's only getting worse." And no one would let Scott fly a goddamn plane! "Is his sister... is that a mutant thing or a medical thing?"
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:26 am (UTC)"A medical thing. She's a mutant, too, but it's unrelated. She was fine when I first knew them. Wild, and a little crazy, but not in the bad way. If that makes sense."
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:28 am (UTC)"Do they know about you?" Obviously Alex wasn't in any danger with this couple of mutants, but Scott would always worry about his brother.
"They should stay here," Scott decided. "Good doctors, good opportunities."
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:39 am (UTC)"They do, but it's okay." He'd trust Jean-Paul with anything. Jeanne-Marie was the opposite of predictable, so there was always a chance the information might get out that way, but it wasn't something Alex spent time worrying about. "And I think they should too, but I'm biased."

Date: 2017-03-26 07:40 am (UTC)"So you and Jean-Paul. Is it, uh...." A relationship?
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:44 am (UTC)"I have no idea what it is," Alex admitted, flat-out. "Other than really hot."
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:45 am (UTC)"What do you want it to be?" Scott asked quickly, because 'hot' and 'Alex' could not live together as concepts in his mind.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:54 am (UTC)"I'm good with what it is." It wasn't a lie, exactly. Alex did like what they had, but other than knowing he didn't want Jean-Paul to leave, he hadn't let himself examine it too closely. He had a tendency to avoid thinking of anything in life as permanent.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 07:56 am (UTC)"That's good." Scott was surprised by how nice it was to know a little more about Alex.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 08:20 am (UTC)"Yeah. New York's working out pretty well so far." No one was more surprised by that than Alex.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 08:21 am (UTC)"I'm glad you're here." If nothing else in Scott's life was working out - and it wasn't - at least he had a brother in town who would drop everything to check on him.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 08:31 am (UTC)"Do you want to crash at my place?" If nothing else, it would be a chance of scenery, of pace, and Scott seemed like he could use that.
no subject
Date: 2017-03-26 08:32 am (UTC)Scott's instinct was to mope in a dark corner. But Alex's offer was so nice, he was nodding his agreement before he even really thought it through. "Sure, yeah. That could be good."
